Safety basics after water damage
Calm priorities when water is in the home. DryCalm is not 911 and does not replace emergency services.
- People first
If anyone is hurt, trapped, or the structure is unsafe, call 911. Water damage is never more important than life safety.
- Electricity and standing water
Do not step into water near outlets, appliances, or panels. Shut power only from a dry location if you can reach the breaker safely.
- Sewage and flood water
Treat sewage and outdoor flood water as contaminated. Keep kids and pets out. Do not use ordinary shop vacs on Category 3 water.
- Stop the source if safe
Close the fixture valve or main shutoff when you can do it without electrical or structural risk. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility / 911.
- Document, then dry
Photograph water lines and damaged materials before major cleanup when possible. Wet drywall and carpet pad usually need more than towels.
